Adblock Plus
This is one of those extensions you must have. To quote the developer,

In fact, you only realize how great this add-on is, once you stop using it :)
So install it from here.
It works right out of the box. After you restart your browser, it asks you to select a filter list, which is a pre-compiled list of known elements to be blocked. I suggest you subscribe (its free) to the US list, as it is more relevant in our context. Thats all you need to do for ad free browsing :)
In case you want to remove some particular image from a page, right click on it and select Adblock Image from the menu. If you want to remove an entire section, click on the red ABP icon next to your search bar on top right of your screen and select “Open Blockable Items”. This gives you an extensive list of all the items on the page. Scroll through it to find what you need (it draws a box around the selected item on the page), and then block it.
